"Let my prayer as incense before thee, and vostanie of my hands as the evening sacrifice." (PS.140:2)

In biblical times, incense is usually offered on the altar of gold. The priest had to put and burn incense daily before the Lord, morning and evening. In the great day that the high priest was to enter beyond the veil in the tabernacle, the Holy of Holies – he had to burn the Smoking of the incense in the Golden censer (Leviticus 16:12-13). He had been holding in one hand and put the lit coals in the censer to burn incense, and at the same time in the other hand to hold the incense. He was vital before he goes into the Holy of Holies to burn incense in the Holy of the Tabernacle as long as the cloud of fragrant smoke over visible all around, and only then could he enter there, where was the ark, the ark of the Covenant with the tablets of God's commandments and the budded rod of Aaron. It was such a sacred moment that the high priest was preparing for it the entire year before this special day. The injunction to burn incense before entering the sight of His face, was given by the Holy Lord.

In the book of Revelation of St. John the divine censers are described as Golden bowls full of incense. The main part of the incense is frankincense. Also called incense smoke coming from them. Smoking incense represents the prayers of saints to God (Revelation 5:8).
