The history of the holiday.

About the events of the ascension is narrated in the Gospels of Mark and Luke and in the acts of the apostles. According to these sources, after his Resurrection from the dead, the Lord repeatedly appeared to his disciples , convinced of the truth of this great miracle, and prepared them to accept the promised Holy spirit. The Savior was erected disciples to the mount of olives, to Bethany, and he lifted up his hands and blessed them. Then He began to ascend to the sky, moving away from them. The acts of the Apostles describe that when the rapture of Christ was hidden by the cloud and to the crowd on the hill came two angels announcing the Second coming of the Lord. The students gleefully went back to Jerusalem and after some time came upon them the Holy Spirit (now celebrated as the feast of the Trinity or Pentecost).

Until the end of the 4th century the Ascension was not separated from Pentecost, and only after the separation of the Trinity as a festive day at the Church Council in Elvira (300g.) The ascension also got the status of separate holidays. "Apostolic Decree" about the year 380, has established the celebration of Easter after ascension, on the 40th day.
