Smyrna is a benzoin resin that has undergone special processing (cleaning and remelting). It is a piece of a homogeneous gray mass interspersed with white areas and has a pleasant tart aroma due to the presence of vanillin, cinnamon and (in some varieties) benzoic acids in it.
